This was very timely for me as I have an interview on Monday. Easy to talk about your values, beliefs, etc. but challenging to call back examples on the spot. This was especially great: "I was prepared. But only for one reason. Because I’ve trained myself to think in stories."
Going to check out this app once it's live. There's so much power in organizing your life into coherent stories - which writing online is an immensely powerful facilitator of.
Thanks for being you, Rick. Always look forward to these posts.
Thank you Jack and good luck with your interview. Where and with who? Would love to be read/listen to it if it's publicly available and you're willing to share. Good luck, and tell some great stories!
This is actually a job interview so will be private on Zoom. I was on a podcast last summer tho (still haven't listened to it back because I'm not sure I can hear myself speak for 45 mins)! And you have eased my nerves by simply reminding me to tell great stories. Be relaxed and more spontaneous to meet the moment as it arises.
It's weird, but this post is one of your most candid ones yet. I actually didn't have the vocabulary to phrase this difficulty until now. We all love spitting out life philosophies we've learnt in life, but you'll be taken seriously only when you can back it up with stories.
Maybe we should all "think in stories". (Love that phrase)
Thank you Ishan. It's funny, because I spent a couple of days working on my newsletter this week and when I got feedback on the draft I realized it wasn't ready and that it needed a lot more work. So I found myself at the last minute needing to post an article that I'd need to create from scratch. I wrote this one in a matter of an hour. I can definitely see how my communications suffer from overthinking and how writing from what is simple and obvious works best. Why is it so hard to see what is simple and obvious?
Rick, I'm facing this EXACT issue with my book. I don't know whether I'm overthinking it or not. I'm right now on my 6th draft, and I've given it out to beta-readers, and I'm just wondering whether all the feedback is too much or not.
Great articulation of a situations I have faced but never thought of it as a problem with a solution (you've now done this for me a few times!). Also the app sounds amazing and very helpful!
It's coming along Rick! Getting involved in bigger projects, which will take a while to see the day of light but have allowed me to go deep and "obsess over quality" (got that from Slow Productivity, which I'm reading and making a lot of sense, you might like it!). Will keep you posted obviously ;) Thanks for asking!
Great story about the flying hamburger. I can imagine your family’s shocked laughter.
Your prompts to help us remember stories are so helpful. At the risk of repeating myself, your years of practice at this and straightforward approach to it always amaze me. It’s like discovering a new civilization or a new language.
I've been using all kinds of way to try and capture my stories and thoughts and have not found a solid system yet. Very interested in the application All My Stories, Rick!
Thank you Marie. I will add you to the list when it's ready for beta users. I'd love for this tool to solve the problem you describe, that is it's intent.
Thanks Robert. I'm hoping this system will be helpful to ghost writers/editors. That's part of its design. If your client used this to capture their stories on a timeline and shared their master list with you you'd then have a way of organizing their life history and accessing the primary building blocks of their narrative, their stories. Would be interested to know since you are in the business if that idea is appealing, or what I might be missing I haven't thought of.
...amazing rick...as someone who has worked in metadata for ages i think your product has a lot of legs...your own personal search of yourself...would love to chat your build and roadmap some point (if you are allowed to or interested)...very cool dude...
Also, wanted to share this quote with you which I think you'll appreciate. It reminded me of your writing. "Storytelling reveals meaning without committing the error of defining it." --Hannah Arendt, political theorist, philosopher
You know I’m all in on this app. It’s such a great concept, and is so needed. I can’t wait to be one of the early users, and see it come to life. The name is perfect! 🙌

Awesome. Sounds like you are lined up just right to do it justice. Again, good luck!

Believe me, I feel you!
Wow, yes, that would be a lot to digest Ishan.
Question of the year❤️
ha ha, yes

Thanks Oscar. How's the filmmaking going?!

Glad to hear you are still deep in the craft Oscar, and of course would love to hear about your progress and discoveries. Stay the path my friend.
Thank you Rick, will do!!

Would love to have that conversation with you.
...maybe a good window next two weeks...dm me...
: )
What a nice way to introduce your app, Rick
That's what I thought too! Thanks Chao.
As you well know, I think this is a brilliant project and am so excited to be a customer and evangelist!
Thanks for your enthusiasm and support Alex!
What an awesome idea!!
Thank you Renee.
Rick,
The way you described what goes on inside when we’re asked to give an example was articulated so well. I was agreeing and nodding along the whole way.
Also, exciting about the app! You’re going to help a lot of people.

Oooh yes!
Thank you Charlie.
Great stuff, Rick. And I really enjoyed the video.
Thanks for watching it Silvio!

You've been so helpful with this initiative Rob. I look forward to sharing it with you.
Congratulations on the new app Rick! Your story highlighted how we usually don't speak in specifics when it's always the best way of communicating.
Thanks!
